Delwinder Singh - Singapore's First Player In The Cambodia Premier League

Delwinder Singh becomes Singapore's First Player In The Cambodia Premier League

Fact Sheet :

Singapore will have one more athlete flying the island nation’s flag high overseas, as 30-year-old defender, Delwinder Singh, becomes the first Singaporean football player to play in the Cambodian Premier League.

Delwinder, the youngest-ever captain in Singapore Premier League history at 19 years of age, earned a move to Siem Reap-based side, Angkor Tiger FC, on a one year deal.

Speaking of the historic moment, Delwinder stated, “Having witnessed first-hand the high level of football that they play in Cambodia, I am very excited to be able to showcase my skills in this growing competitive league. It was also an honour for me to learn that I am the first Singaporean player here (in Cambodia), and I will do my best to bring my wealth of experience from the Singapore Premier League to make my country proud.”

Delwinder Singh, who holds 5 Singapore caps, is represented by Rookbook Sports, who also expressed their enthusiasm for the transfer, having worked with the player since February 2021, not long after the company’s foundation in December 2020.

“We have seen Delwinder’s cultured skillset as well as his incredible work ethic, and are proud to be able to secure this monumental move that marks a moment of history for Singapore football. We have no doubt that he will thrive in his new club, and continue to bring joy to the fervent football fans in both Siem Reap, and Singapore.” said Vikram Jayakumar, Rookbook Sports’ Director of Management.

Capable of playing in all defensive positions, Delwinder is expected to be primarily tasked to marshal the backline and play a key role in organizing the defence and midfield, as the revitalized team looks to make a strong impression in the upcoming Cambodian Premier League campaign starting in August.

“I am delighted to welcome Delwinder to the squad,” mentions Angkor Tiger Head Coach, Alistair Heath. “We have been scouting Delwinder for some time now, and we like what we see. I know he has what it takes to play in a variety of positions, and we are certainly going to benefit from his leadership, aggression and defensive acumen.”

Angkor Tiger FC was founded in 2015, and plays in Siem Reap, Cambodia at the Hanuman Stadium. The team holds a strong fanbase in Cambodia, winning the award for the most popular club in Cambodia at the Cambodia Football Awards 2018.

About Delwinder Singh :

Handed his first call-up to the Singapore National Team in 2011, Delwinder became one of the youngest players to represent the Lions when he made his debut for the senior team against Philippines when at just 18 years of age.

Delwinder last played for Geylang International FC, where he added a noted dynamism to the club’s defence, notching 2 clean sheets and scoring a goal in five appearances for the Singapore club.
